Field Day, STEM Day, Arcade Day 2013

Hello to my favorite parents!!  We have had such wonderful weeks of late...here is a quick run down, some reminders,  AND a great video capturing lots of our fun memories!

Over the past couple weeks we have been very involved in two particular projects...play production and our own schoolwide STEM project...the arcade games.

First, our plays.  While learning about all of the important features of a play and how they play a role (no pun intended) in producing an excellent play, we read LOTS of plays.  Then came the hard part...deciding which plays to perform...and the even tougher job...trying to get the part each student wanted!  Alas, we chose THREE plays and most students were very content with their parts.  As you are aware, they have been practicing quite a bit in order to be ready to present the plays for you all this WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12th from 9:15 am - 10:30 am.  We hope you can join us!  We will have a dress rehearsal on Tuesday, June 11th...but most of the kids have their costumes at school already, so no worries there!

Our STEM project has been so much fun!  We watched a video about a 7 year old boy named Caine who lives in East LA...he created an arcade out of cardboard one summer while hanging at his dad's shop.  Long story short, a man who creates documentary films found Caine...and Caine's Arcade was born!  The students were very inspired by the 8 min video and then began the STEM process of planning, imagining, creating, changing, and eventually producing an arcade game.  All along the kids knew their audience would be their kindergarten buddies.  They were so wonderful planning the appropriate heights, distances, etc.  They even brought in "recycled" toys and created goody bags.  All in all, that day was one of my most proud as a teacher...the joy on the faces of the kindergarten students as they played these games and earned tickets...was almost as great as the joy on the faces of your kids as they taught their buddies how to play and watched their hard work be enjoyed.  It was quite a moment for me!!

Of course, we've done many other things, too...we stopped switching for math last week, but our class worked on area and perimeter and designed our dream bedrooms!  We've been continuing our work with functional documents, and of course, Writer's Workshop!

I really can't believe we have four and 1/2 days left...I am going to miss this group of kids more than you know...it has been my absolute pleasure teaching them.

Enjoy the movie below...it was a labor of love...just click on the link, "Field Day, STEM Day, Arcade Day 2013"

Career Day at UES!!

We had CAREER DAY at our school...parents/volunteers came in to teach us about their careers and how their education has helped them become who they are today!

Mr. and Mrs. Chanda came in and talked with us about ENGINEERING!

Mr. Wills came in and told us all about being an RV salesman!

Master Lee and his colleague came in to show us what they do in their career...we got some karate training right there on the spot!

Summer...seriously?!?!

I can't believe we're arriving to this point....SUMMER...but believe it or not...we are!  This time of year, lots of people ask me, "What can/should I be doing with my child over the summer?"

1.  The MOST important thing you can do for your child is to make sure she/he is reading EVERY day...a novel, a magazine, a comic book, their favorite picture books...mix it up.  I am including some links for you to peruse with great reading suggestions...I like how Scholasatic Books sets their lists up...lots of icons to help your child find books he/she might be interested in.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  although many of your kids can read all of the books on the age 10-12 list, make sure the topic is appropriate for your "soon to be fourth grader".  They are capable of reading far above their actual maturity level!!  If your child sees a book he/she is interested in, then you can go to Scholastic.com and look up the book.  There you can get a reading level and a concise summary to let you know if the book is indeed appropriate.  You can also get a lot of that same information at Amazon.com.

2.  Spend time talking to your children...talk to them about things you are interested in...talk to them about the book they are reading.  Talk to them about their feelings about a show, story, play you saw together.

3.  Practice math facts./skills..keep them on the math websites they've been introduced to that will enable them to continue to practice their skills!

4.  And last, let them play.  PLEASE, let them play.  They deserve a break...so make sure they have a lot of fun reading and continually learning.

Just Friday I received a HUGE list of summer reading websites from the Advanced Academics Department...so I'm including that list as well.....

Time is FLYING...can we slow down just a LITTLE!?!?

Well, I think this is once again going to be a post of pictures...I have SOOO many to share...but first let me say that I am having so much fun with this group...I want the time to slow down...we're getting way too close to the end...and I'm NOT ready!  I love these kids...

We have been super busy and will continue to be right up until the last day!!  Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions about anything...I anticipate the blog will be lighter just because of the amount of time it takes...for instance...my family left town for a baseball tournament Friday at 6:30 and got home today at 6:00 pm!  So...as you can see, my time is very limited...

Enjoy these photos and let your child give you the captions!

So that is what I wrote LAST weekend...then the computer gave me a hard time uploading...let's try again...

We had a great week...many kids turned in their opinion essays on Friday...and I have a few more finishing them up on Monday...I have been very impressed with their writing!  We also finished our novel this week...I'm pretty sure if you ask your kids they'd say they really liked The Twenty-One Balloons.  We will finish up with some comprehension and then we will move into "Reading Functional Documents" along with other things in Language Arts.

We have the AG BUS at school right now...have you heard about it?  It is a portable science center where the kids get to go in and participate in experiments...I have photos below...let your child give you captions!!  We also have been busy with rocks and fossils.  We were fortunate to have Mrs. Smith, the mom of another third grader at UES, come and visit our classroom this week.  She studied environmental science and geology in college and had SO much to teach us...and she brought tons of samples for the kids to observe.  THANK YOU, MRS. SMITH!!

Our Writer's Workshop is just plugging along...we have so many kids publsihing these days!!  I have watched your kids grow into better writers while moving through the writing process this year.  I have held what feels like MILLIONS of teacher conferences...and each time I meet with a student we work on something particular that they need to improve on...some kids have become pros at quotation marks in dialogue.  Others have learned to indent with each new speaker.  Some have worked on keeping with the same tense while writing, or continuing to write from the same perspective...but everyone is improving!!

We have a very busy month with TONS ahead of us...I will do my best to keep you updated...look for more REMIND 101s and probably less frequent (not less than every two weeks) blogging...

Have a beautiful Saturday...LOVIN this weather!!

Happy End of January
